With a few reckless exceptions, Kingsman agents guard their given names carefully, for security purposes of course. Still, it’s fairly common for an agent to know the given names of a few close colleagues or former proteges.
No one know’s Merlin’s given name, and no one ever will.
When Merlin was recruited to Kingsman, the final test he received was not to kill his dog, but to kill himself. His final evaluation was on how completely he could erase his own identity from the world. Already an orphan with no family ties – a requirement for anyone training into the Merlin position – the task took him just under 48 hours and included untraceable digital infiltration of the Departments of Transport, Health, and Education, Interpol, and the American CIA. And those were the easy parts. By the time he was finished, he no longer existed.
“Merlin” isn’t just an alias or call-sign, it’s the only name he has left.
